MSFW 09- Designer Series Two & Three

The crowd is anxious, waiting for the fashion show to begin. A military drumming beat begins to blare. Soft blue and yellow lights hit the catwalk. Models stream out from the black curtains and walk along the runway, no no sorry not walk, they strut.

Models carry a stride with attitude as they showcase some mesmerising collections from our very own Australian talented designers – forecasting some inspiring trends for this coming spring/summer at the Melbourne Spring Fashion show.

Catwalk fashion appears perfect. Clothing is perfectly styled, perfectly fitted, perfectly steamed and the show is perfectly choreographed. But what goes on behind the runway is definitely not so perfect.

Tiresome hours of work is required to ensure that a fashion parade is a success.

I had the pleasure of assisting stylist, Kate Gaskin on her two shows- Designer Series Two and Three. Designer Series Two featured big commercial names such as  DhiniLIFEwithBIRD, Kirrily Johnston, Nicola Finetti, Gorman, and Ginger and Smart.  Whilst Designer Series Three featured the designers Arthur Galan, Bettina Liano, Jack London, Nevenka, Leopold, Wayne Cooper and Nicola Finetti’s diffusion line, Nylon Flocks.

The fitting of a fashion show almost demands chaos. It is imperative that all models try on their designated outfits and shoes prior to the show commencing, this has proven over and over again to be a tedious activity as most of the models are in either a rush to leave for their next show, their shoes don’t fit their feet or in the case of Nicola Finetti’s Nylon range many of the dresses were too tight barely covering some of the model’s behinds!

At the fittings, Melbourne couture designer Dhini Pararajasingham was the only designer to have stayed all day to view her military lime-mustard collection on the models. She was a perfectionist and did not accept anything less than perfect when it came to fitting her collection on the models.

“Those pants don’t sit on her right, they are much too big Kate,” insisted Parararjasingham.

Gaskin’s response was seemingly positive, “ok let’s try something else then.”

Gaskin’s styling flair shone bright amongst all of the franticness on the day of the fittings. She catered for Pararajasinham’s needs and at the same time knew which outfits required that extra ‘something’, which outfits didn’t work and which outfits needed to go to which models.

Gaskin is an exception to all stylists as she never once lost her cool. She stayed professional at all times and was highly organised throughout the show.

Minus a few burnt ears in the hair dressing department, blistered fingers and aching feet both shows were an utter success right from Dhini’s navy and gold military hats right through to Nevenka’s gypsy-girl inspired dresses.

Beyond the coloured lights, beneath the constructed make-up and styled hair, through the curtains lies a heavily organised and successful fashion project.
